Pipettes, Burettes and Dispensers
Pipettes and Burettes are both used for transferring liquid, though pipettes are graduated and more precise when transferring volumes within the microliter range. Pyrex (borosilicate glass) pipettes come in color coded and volumetric varieties. Class A pipettes are manufactured and calibrated To Contain (bottom line) and To Deliver (top line) to specifications for Class A volumetric ware. Color coded pipettes are coded by size for easy identification. Serological pipettes transfer my milliliter and require a dispenser or controller to create a vacuum and assist with transferring the liquid.
Pipette Dispensers come in several varieties, including:
- Pipette controllers - Also called pipettors, these handheld devices are used to dispense and aspirate small amounts of liquid along with serological pipettes. They use a motorized system to create a vacuum.
- Bottle-top dispensers - Attach to a bottle to dispense solvents
- Air pumps - safely measure hazardous reagents and bacterial fluids. Attach to open-ended Pasteur or Mohr pipettes and use electricity to dispense and aspirate liquid.
- Continuous dispensers - with inlet tube inside a reagent bottle to dispense liquid continuously.
- Repetitive dispensers - use with pipette tips to dispense once or multiple times with one suction.
