Denatonium benzoate is famously known to be the most bitter chemical compound, with a 0.05 ppm for the benzoate and a 0.01 pm for the saccharide. MacFarlan Smith was responsible for discovering the compound in 1958 while doing research on local anesthetics. It is a quaternary ammonium cation and can be obtained by the quaternization of lidocaine which is classified as a popular anesthetic. 

Denatonium Benzoate, also known as denatonium saccharide, is a bitter chemical compound used to denature ethanol so it is not considered an alcoholic beverage and in clinical trials to replicate the bitter taste of some medications. Ungraded products supplied by TCI America are generally suitable for common industrial uses or for research purposes but typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.
